Housing Stability and Family Services Internship

Position Title: Undergraduate Intern – Housing Stability and Family Services

Organization: Family Promise of the Great Rivers, Inc.

Location: Sparta, Wisconsin

Position Type: Part-Time, Unpaid Internship (Academic Credit Eligible)

What You Will Learn

By the completion of the internship, students will:

• Understand the causes and impacts of homelessness and housing instability.

• Develop foundational skills in trauma-informed and strengths-based service delivery.

• Gain experience working with diverse populations experiencing complex social challenges.

• Learn how social determinants of health influence housing outcomes.

• Understand the role of community resources, public benefits, and support systems in promoting family stability.

• Strengthen professional communication, documentation, and ethical decision-making skills.

• Explore career pathways in social services, behavioral health, public health, and related helping professions.

Internship Responsibilities

Under staff supervision, interns may:

• Assist with client intake, assessments, and program orientation activities.

• Support case managers in identifying resources and coordinating referrals.

• Research housing, employment, healthcare, childcare, and other community resources.

• Observe and participate in case management meetings and service planning.

• Assist with program documentation and data collection.

• Support outreach and engagement efforts with community partners.

• Participate in educational workshops and family support activities.

• Assist with evaluating program outcomes and identifying service gaps.

• Complete a capstone project or special assignment related to their field of study.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants should:

• Be currently enrolled in an undergraduate program in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, Public Health, Counseling, Community Health, Family Studies, Behavioral Sciences, or a closely related field.

• Demonstrate strong interpersonal and communication skills.

• Have an interest in working with vulnerable populations and promoting social equity.

• Be able to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.

• Be willing to learn, receive feedback, and work collaboratively within a team environment.
